One of the most important aspects of the constitution, in Mr. Palfreyman’s eyes, is the leadership. Namely that students showed responsibility and brought it together.

“I love the idea of students taking more ownership of their learning,” Mr. Palfreyman said. He went on to note the importance of the document.

“With the constitution, I think it’s a great idea—again it’s student ownership, and I love student ownership and student creation, and I love seeing things like that”

When speaking about ownership, it is essential to mention Brandon Ascione. As the Speaker for OSUM, Brandon Ascione took it upon himself to draft and promote the newly signed student body constitution. In an interview about his goals with the constitution, he said the following:

“My goals with the constitution was all about giving formal accountability to student government as well as empower them to give true service to the needs of our school.”

This student government includes Student Council, and OSUM (Orem Student Unity Management), a board that includes presidents of student-led clubs.

Just how long the constitution will last is uncertain, but those involved hope it is isn’t short-lived. Brandon Ascione said:

“My biggest worry from the very beginning in taking this project on was that this—this 12 page document that I have worked so hard on, that so many other people have helped me with, is that it would gather dust on a shelf.”

Mr. Browning was much more optimistic about the prospects of the document, saying

“It should be something that is constantly looked at and constantly reviewed by our student leadership as well as our administrative team.”
