A guy asks a girl to Homecoming

Homecoming is right around the corner and that means boys have started asking the question, “Will you go to the dance with me?” They do it in such extravagant ways that the effort has been deemed a promposal. However the big gestures are no longer just for prom; they are for nearly every dance.

Already this year someone has sung to his hopefully date in the commons at lunch. During the football game against Alta, one of our players had the cheerleaders hold up a poster to ask a member of ODC to the dance. People makeup clever rhymes that involve props and or food, or make up riddles that their dates have to figure out to find out who asked them. Some people say that the extravagance of the act is getting out of hand.

Many parents have said that when they were younger the only time people did anything fancy to ask someone to a dance was for prom, maybe homecoming. It wasn’t as big of a deal back then. But now when time comes for some of the smaller dances, some people spend more money asking their dates than it costs to get into the dance.

Spencer Baldwin, a senior here at Orem High said, “I feel like you should just be able to go up to a girl, maybe with some flowers, and ask ‘will you go to the dance with me?’ It shouldn’t have to be some big production.”

Even some of the teachers think the so called promposals are a little out of hand. When asked his opinion on the matter Mr. Ellingford of the English department merely said, “Bleh aghh!”

When asked, many girls stated that they don’t care how they are asked. One senior said, “As long as I get asked, I’m happy.  But I am even happier if how they ask involves food.”

So whether a guy plans to ask in a very creative and complicated way, or just give her a flower and ask face to face, he needs to do it quick before he runs out of time.
