Books create adventure

Books create adventure.

Reading and books are a big part of a student’s lives. A lot of students love reading and use it as a release from stress and anxiety. Others see reading as just one more thing they have do. Different things motivate a student to read.

A few students were asked why they liked reading. Zack Fraser, one of Orem High’s sophomores said, “It’s an escape. It takes your mind off everything.”

“It’s like a little movie in my head.” Orem High junior, Lia Salanoa said.

Books can have an incredible influence on people. “[Reading] can open your eyes and show you new perspectives. Otherwise you are stuck in your own skin and don’t know any different.” Mrs. Packer, an English teacher at Orem High said.

“I like reading only when I can pick what I read and don’t have a time frame in which I have to finish it. Otherwise it’s not my favorite.” Misha Sawyer, an Orem High senior, said.

Many students enjoy reading a lot more when they are able to choose what they read and Mrs. Packer has found this to be true. “I used to tell my students what books they had to read, and I realized that they probably weren’t getting what they needed to out of the books. This is the first year that I have let my students pick what they read.”

Hannah Davenport, an OHS sophomore, was asked what she considered a “good” book. She said, “A book that teaches a lesson.”

Opinions on books and reading in general vary greatly from person to person. Talk to people about what they like to read. Branch out. Try something new. Something great could come as a result.
