This year Orem High gets a taste of something new. There are 14 new members of the Orem High School staff for the 2016-17 school year. This includes a new assistant principal, six new P.E. teachers and coaches, two new foreign language teachers, two new English teachers, and three new teachers that specialize in other subjects.

A couple of the new teachers agreed to share a little bit about themselves.

Mikayla Poole, one of the new English teachers, has been teaching for four years. She taught English as well as Journalism and Yearbook at Mountain Crest High School, the school she used to teach at. She is a little bummed not to be teaching those classes anymore, but is glad to have a little bit less stress in her life. She has “a mild obsession with sloths…maybe not so mild.” She is married and her husband is a Orem High graduate.

Perry Wildeboer, the new U.S. History teacher, has been teaching for 24 years. He has taught U.S. History, Sports Psychology, Fitness for Life, and Current Issues. He says that Sports Psychology has been his favorite subject to teach. He was the head basketball coach at Timpview High School for 14 years. Now he gets to bring all his coaching knowledge to Orem High and help the Tigers rise to the top. He also used to tame and train wild parrots.

Mrs. Poole and Mr. Wildeboer were both asked how Orem High compared to the previous schools they’ve worked at. They both said that Orem had a nicer building. Mrs. Poole said that the students at Orem know each other better and are closer knit than the students at her previous school. Mr. Wildeboer said that Orem has a lot more school spirit.

Mr. Wytiaz, a math teacher at Orem High for eight years, says that one of the benefits to having new teachers is that they bring more, different perspectives to a situations.

The Tigers are excited to get to know the new teachers better and see what they will bring to the school this year.
