Conformity and its effect on students
When high school starts we see even more distance between people even though they are doing the same exact thing as each other, just going through the motions. Why does this happen? Why do students start to distance themselves from the people around them?
To get into these questions we have to ask, what is conformity? When asking Google the definition of conformity, it defined it as, “compliance with standards, rules, or laws” and “Behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards.”
When asked, Evelyn Oler a sophomore at Orem High said, “Conformity is joining with others for strength”. When told the actual definition of conformity she said “Ah, I knew it was something along the lines of that.”
When interviewing an unnamed student about the group of people they hangout with at Orem High School she said that she hangs out with a couple groups of people and said that she just goes through the motions with them. When asked what the motions are, she said “hanging out and sometimes doing stupid stuff, but I never do really stupid stuff so if that happens I just leave”.
When searching these questions, I found an article on the effects of conformity on students called “Copy-cat? Study Explores Conformity in Children With Few Friends”. This talked about the many ways conformity can be harmful to a lot of friends, and not a lot of them.
Being in this conformance may be comforting to students at Orem High School, but they all need to check and make sure they come up with different ideas.
