Everyone has a passion, whether it’s a musical instrument, singing, acting, sports, or something else. A lot of people join clubs or teams to connect with others that are passionate about the same thing. When things change in a drastic way, like new members, learning new things, or getting a new coach, things can get difficult.

Orem, Mountain View, and Timpanogos High Schools all received a new swim coaching staff. Orem and MV both hired parent coaches, while Timpanogos found a former swimmer that now teaches at Canyon View Junior High. They were all looking for the same thing.

Last year, the MV coach stepped in to coach for Orem. Orem’s 2018-2019 swim coach that was supposed to coach ended up suddenly quitting shortly before the season started, leaving them coachless weeks before the season started. Kenzie Jones balanced both Orem and Mountain View last year, but did not come back to coach either school this year. They had two different parents step up to coach. Orem High had Jenn Gale and MV had Jossie Tobiassian.

Sage Hendry, Orem High School Senior and Swim Team Captain said, “They [The OHS Swim Team] have handled it [the change to the new coach] really well because it has been such a positive change from last year.”

Mountain View also seems to be doing well.

Spencer Faragher, a Mountain View High School Senior and Swim Team Captain said, “I think our coaches are a lot stricter and I think a lot of kids are getting more of a workout and realizing how hard swim actually is.”

Timpanogos is a different story. Their coach last year, Aaron Burg did not come back this year. They got a new coach, Katie Sundberg.

Jordan Patten, a Timpanogos Junior, said, “I feel confident in our teams ability to progress now that we hopefully have a stable coach.”

All in all, the three swim teams have had their struggles, but they have been able to pull through and bring confidence to coaches and swimmers alike.
