With all the catastrophes happening around the world, between earthquakes in Mexico, hurricanes in the south, and forest fires in California, there has been a lot of sadness and service to go around. Although most students can’t do more to help than give donation money, there are many Tigers that have created ways to help people in the community and school.

There may not be any catastrophes happening in Utah Valley, but there are people here that need help, too.

Mother Teresa said, “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.”

At Orem High there are plenty of people who need help and plenty of places that give help. Service clubs at Orem High are a great place that get people involved in the community and school.

4th Wall Service Club goes to elementary schools with no art programs and hosts different activities teaching them how to sing and dance. Madi Gines said, “The elementary kids love us, they love coming and learning new things about music and dancing and other things that have to do with theatrics.”

Best Buddies is another service club where students at OHS help the special needs kids. Anyone can join this club, it’s basically being a peer tutor during after school hours. People can do fun activities like bowling, painting, or watching movies.

Lily Day said, “It’s so great to get to know these kids and have a friendship with them. My favorite part about best buddies is by far the people.” This is may be the easiest and most fun way to serve in the school.

There are so many more ways to serve people in and out of school. Anyone can volunteer at the library, serve food at the food and care coalition, participate in Penny Wars during Christmas time, or even buy lemonade the next time there’s a lemonade stand.

There are a million ways to serve besides these and but remember that everything counts. Ronald Reagan former president of the U.S. said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”
