In high school there is a lot of controversy concerning whether it is good or bad for a high school age student to be seriously involved with a “significant other.” This is a particular controversial topic here in Utah due to various religious beliefs and teachings, which are more dominant here than in other states.
Edwin Gualotuna is a senior at Orem High and has a girlfriend whom he has been dating for eleven months and considers himself to be pretty seriously involved with. Edwin recognizes that people have different opinions on the matter, but says:
“I enjoy having someone who pushes me to be a better person.”
Devin Robins is a sophomore at the school and said he doesn’t have a girlfriend because “Girls have cooties.” However, he says that he thinks “Having a girlfriend could be pretty fun,” but that “it can be bad to have a significant other because it can take away opportunities you might have had after high school.”
Coach Schwab, a coach at Orem High, said, “I don’t think it’s the best idea. It can be a big distraction and you could miss out on other high school activities. I would say use high school as an opportunity to meet more people and have fun.”
Aubree Davis is another student at Orem who doesn’t have a significant other. Aubree says, “I don’t need one,” because “The qualities I’m looking for in a person can’t be found in high school.” She says, “I think you can learn from one,” (having a relationship). “But I don’t agree with it. Setting yourself up for heartbreak, practically.”
