Operation Smile is an organization that raises donations for children born with cleft palates in third world countries. This year, a group of sophomores resurrected the club at Orem High.
A cleft palate is a birth defect where the roof of the mouth and upper lip is split. This causes speach impediments, dental issues, and eating difficulties. The older a child gets, the more difficult it gets to handle.
Operation Smile’s purpose is to raise money for these children. Students participate in fundraisers throughout the year.
The club is planning to do a fundraiser this Friday. They’ve been coordinating with a TBA restaurant to have a percent of the income donated to the Operation Smile program. Another fundraiser will be a 5K–Smiles for Miles–in spring.
All ideas generate from students; the club is student run. Ideas are discussed when the club meets every other Wednesday in the advisor–Ms. Guiver’s room.
Club treasurer, Lily Day said, “As we grow up we tend to think more of ourselves and what people think of us. This will help students realize it’s not us that we have to constantly think about, but others.” Students involved are passionate about their service.
The previous time the club was at Orem, it was large–about a hundred members. Over a period of two years students raised about $15,000. Members hope for it to grow, again.
President, Faith Call said the club “will get students to be more active in school activities, will [build friendships], and support a good cause–giving kids a better life.”
Students interested in joining can talk to Ms. Guiver.
