At Orem High School, as it is well known the administration and other staff have a hold  on what the students can chant and cheer for at the sporting events. One of the major events is the Orem Tigers Mens Basketball team. There have been many calls and other cheers that have been shot down by the administration for being too rude to the opposing team.

The administration at the school has banned some of the cheers because they want the special golden sportsmanship star that hangs in the field house. If only they knew what the students had to say about that. Having asked students at the school, Abby Hill and Sarah Eggett both said, “I think that it is uncalled for, (Blocking the chants) we’re high school students, we should be able to go to a game, cheer, and have fun!” Nick McOmber also said, “I think it is a good idea to ban some chants that could possibly be offensive to the players. However, at sports games fans do chants, and have done chants, for an extremely long time. If someone finds themselves being offended, that is their problem that we don’t need to be a part of.  I think that is tradition to do chants and the administration should not refrain students from doing them.”

The administration at the high school has teachers stand and act as security guards. Recently at the Great Western Shoot Out held at Orem High School had teachers and principals guarding the court from the fans in the bleachers. Before the game had started a student was handing out the poppers and was going to have everyone pop them when Orem had made their first three of the game. The poppers were promptly taken and they were not able to pop them. The student section at the game began to jump on the bleachers and a teacher had to tell the students that they could not jump because we were going to break the bleachers. The student section at the Tiger Field House does not have benches but just a wooden row. How could it possibly break then? Having talked to a student about that event they said, “The administration is full of crap, the don’t deserve to treat us like crap all because of a stupid star, we don’t care about the star, we want this place to be a horrible place to play in for the other team… they can’t tell me what I can do.”

The high school has been known for lacking student spirit at sporting events lately. Students said that they don’t want to go to the sporting events because they can’t do anything! Some of the cheers that have been banned from using are, Push it, shoot the zebra, Hey Ho, and apparently jumping because its either degrading to others or it’s going to break the stands. Next thing we know, clapping is going to be banned.

So a question to the whole administration at Orem High, do you want a nine inch star or do you want school pride and students to actually go to the games?
