This year there have been some changes to the Alpine School District calendar. One of the most noticeable changes is the shortening of the winter break. As of this year the Orem High winter break will last from December 23rd to January 2nd, 11 days, only 7 of those being school days. This is a big change from the years prior. In 2015 the break ran from December 21st to January 3rd, 16 days, 10 of those being school days. The changes to the schedule has resulted in a whole 5 days being dropped.

This change has many students concerned as not only does it affect the time that they get off of school but also the time they have with family during the holiday season.

On Change.org multiple petitions have been started proposing that we get our winter break back. One of the petitions started by “Karly P” has received over 3,000 signatures in 2 days. When asked why she signed the petition Cayla Cochrane says, “I’m signing because Winter break is important to my family. Due to my hectic work and dance schedule I rarely ever see my family anymore. Winter break was those few days that we utilized to spend time with each other and recharge for the new and even crazier year.”

Students are anxious to see if their pleas to the district are heard. Alyssa Dunn says–to the district–“Please hear our voices as we express our concerns.”
