At Orem High School, the main stairs are typically crammed before first period, lunch, and after school. When the bell rings, a rush of students is sure to follow it.
One hundred and ten Orem High Students were surveyed on “how congested/crowded the main staircases are at Orem High? On a scale of 1-5, with 5 being always and 1 being never.” The average response was a 4. This concludes that the main staircases are frequently crowded.
As humans there is a natural instinct to follow the crowd. While some people consciously choose to follow the crowd, others subconsciously follow. Either way this crowd is contributing to the congested stairs.
Megan Pearson an Orem High Senior said: “this year seems to be more crowded than previous years due to a higher amount of sophomores coming into Orem versus the number of 2016 seniors leaving Orem.” Having a higher population leads to more students using the staircases.
The layout of Orem High is a contributor to congested stairs. There are three staircases in the building, with two going from the first to third floor. These two staircases are more accessible to a majority of classrooms, while the single staircase going from first to second floor leads to fewer classrooms. Because of the lack of accessibility to the classrooms many students will often choose the same staircase for a more time efficient route.
Different reasons play into the crowded staircases at Orem High. No matter the reason the stairs seem to be more crammed than usual.
