Everyone likes music–whether a die hard Bieber fan or a more casual listener, many enjoy listening to one genre or another. Everyone has their own unique preferences, but what about Orem High School?
Some students liked what they did simply because of their parents. “I really like the older stuff. I grew up listening to what my dad listened to because I didn’t really have a choice, but now that I have a choice, I found that I actually like what my dad listens to,” said Garrett Payne.
“I love country music just because that’s what I’ve grown up with. Shania Twain is fantastic,” said Shelisa Frampton.
The majority have developed their own tastes. “Dubstep,” said Taylor Whitlock. “I like lots of bass and electronic sounding music. I like non-lyrical songs.”
“I like a capella music like Pentatonix or Barber Shop Quartets because the sound isn’t made-up. They can do any type of instrument or any genre,” said McKinsey Nielsen.
“I like stuff that is contemporary, kind of pop-ish, but not stereotypical pop like Ariana Grande, or Nicki Minaj,” said Richard Higinbotham.
“I like to listen to just about everything. I turn on the radio and I’ll just find any song I like,” said Joseph Peterson.
The next question was to define ‘good music.’
Some had a good grasp on what they liked about a genre. “If it has good vocals, good beat, good lyrics,” said one student. “Good overall message,” stated another.
Several students thought that emotion played a big role in distinguishing good music from bad. “It’s the emotion and the words. The two being put together in unison.” “If I’m having a bad day, and it comes on the radio, and I instantly have a good day. That is a good song.” “Something that defines the situation I’m in, and connects with me.”
Conversely, many students are unsure why they thought their music was good. “I think music can be defined in a lot of different ways… That’s a hard question,” realized one student. “To tell the truth, I do not know,” admitted another. “It just instinctively feels good, y’know?”
Some others pointed out what good music is not. “No swearing, and no talking about love and how sad it is. Or trucks. No trucks.” “You wanna hear my definition of not a good song? ‘Shake it Off’ by Taylor Swift.”
All things considered, there is a surprising amount of diversity at OHS. There is an eclectic mixture of personalities, and certainly that is reflected in music tastes.
