“In the last 20 years the food has significantly decreased in quality and taste, but it is not the lunch ladies faults,” an Orem High custodian said when asked about the modification of food at Orem High.
At Orem High School there have been many changes in the school lunches over the last couple of years. The lunches have become less appealing to students, teachers, and custodians.
The popularity of eating school lunch has declined. Years ago, cafeteria food was much more accepted. But now, with readily available fast food and other options, fewer students eat from the lunch room.
The purpose of the food changing in the cafeteria is to help students eat healthier. However, the meals are actually less healthy. With the new food having more preservatives, the home-made rolls they used to make were essentially better for students.
“I loved school lunch, it just depends on what I used to get, but most of the time it was amazing…If you paid you could eat as much as you wanted, I remember eating pizza, tater tots, Twix, ice cream bars, and a regular school lunch all in one day,” said Chase Adams, a Pleasant Grove High School grad of 2007. Pleasant Grove, and schools throughout the district, have also been affected by the changes.
Students don’t have the option to purchase snacks or drinks at the school store, or at the the shop in the lunch room anymore because these types of food do not follow the food guidelines. The vending machines have had to change the types of food that are in them.
Nyra Ward, the head cafeteria worker, explained that school lunch is completely controlled by the government. They have little to no control over the change of food. These drastic alterations in the diet at Orem High are caused by federal food guidelines.
