On November 5 2024 Donald Trump was re-elected as the 47th president of the United States of America. On Tuesday billions of Americans prepared for a long night. For some, the night would bring joyous celebration. For others, it brought devastating and life altering news.
The election happened fast. Much quicker than many were expecting, however one big question remains: why did Trump win the election?
Many reasons could be used to explain it, but here are a few big ones. The first reason is a major shift in demographics. Based on polling results 46% of voters in the age range of 18-29 voted for Donald trump, which means 52% voted for Harris. Meaning there was almost a perfect split between this age group of voters.
This wasn’t the only shift in demographics. Many expected an extreme difference in the amount of women’s votes for Harris rather than Trump’s. However, about 55% of women voted for Harris, while 45% of women voted for Trump. Harris still had more votes from women, but the gap wasn’t nearly as big as many were expecting it to be.
On the election night many waited with bated breaths to see which candidate would get the electoral votes from the swing states. The swing states were the ones who would decide who would win the election. There were seven major swing states in this election. Trump was able to get Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Winning these states gave Trump the boost he needed to reach the coveted 270 votes.
The swing states weren’t the only reason Trump got ahead though. Americans vote for people who they feel like will give them a better country to live in. Although there are a lot of problems in our society right now, there are a few major ones that swayed Americans’ votes. One of these was inflation.
In June of 2022 Inflation hit its peak at 9.1 percentage points. Democrats have usually been handed the blame for the struggles in the economy, especially inflation. Inflation is a topic that hits close to home for many Americans, it affects so much of their day to day lives. Trump’s plans to help reduce the inflation in America is very appealing to Americans who are struggling to get by in this demanding economy.
Although we can’t be sure what exactly happened to make the cards lay out the way they did, there are many statistics and other sources of information that can give Americans answers on the way the election ended.
No one could’ve predicted how this election would turn out. Many factors shifted in very unexpected ways. However, based on the shift in demographics, inflation policies, and Trump winning the swing states, Americans can gain some understanding of why the election resulted in the way it did.
