A voter casting their ballot for the 2020 election,

The 2024 Presidential Election was a historical, unpredictable event in American history. The results of the election would have passed the presidency on to the first female president or to a former president serving non consecutive terms which hasn’t happened since the late 1800s. There were dozens of factors that decided which way the American public and their representatives will vote, so let’s cast a glance upon both candidates’ stance on 5 major issues.

Immigration-

Trump supports mass deportation and believes immigration is out of control and seeks to defend the country from illegal immigrants. Trump’s strategy to control the immigration influx is to utilize military force such as the National Guard. He plans “to carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American history” and ensure only immigrants who went through the immigration system legally can live in America.

Harris wants to focus efforts on border security, but has largely shied away from the topic of immigration. She wants to bring back a compromise made in the senate that would have hired more border agents and toughen the standards of asylum.

Abortion-

Trump has said he would not push for a national ban as presi

dent but refused to say he would veto a national ban. He calls himself the most “pro-life president” and wants to turn the decision of abortions to the state. He has pledged his administration would be “great for women and their reproductive rights.”

Harris identifies as “pro-choice.” She is urging congress to pass a national law codifying abortion rights. She seeks to reinstate Roe v. Wade, which protects abortions up to the point of viability (around 21 weeks.) She has vowed to restore reproductive freedoms and firmly believes Trump will pass a

national abortion ban in his presidency.

Environment/Climate Change-

Wildfire intensified by heat and drought.

Trump does not believe that climate change is a very pressing issue facing the United States, and has prioritized other pressing matters over climate change. He has said “I don’t think it’s a hoax, I think there’s probably a difference. But I don’t know that it’s manmade.”

Harris believes climate change is an “existential threat.” She supports nuclear power as a carbon-free solution. Despite popular belief, she is not exactly running a platform of decarbonization, but a focus on ways to implement decarbonization.

Economy-

Trump is very well known for the country’s thriving economy under his presidency. He plans to renew his 2017 tax bill that does not necessarily provide tax cuts, but prevents a sharp tax escalation that would have otherwise become law in 2025.  He pledged not to expand child tax credit and has addressed the idea of a “baby bonus” for families. He also plans to implement a 10-20 percent import tariff on imported goods.

Harris argues her economy will provide relief from inflation and an opportunity economy, fixated on the promotion of the lower and middle class. Her platform promotes housing affordability (providing up to $25,000 in downpayment assistance and $10,000 tax cut for first time homeowners), banning price gouging, reducing healthcare costs (capping medicine prices, and revisiting Trump’s signature tax cuts. She plans to raise taxes for the wealthy.

Gun Control-

Trump “believes that every American has a God-given right to protect themselves and their family and has proven through his actions that he will defend law-abiding gun owners.” He supports providing teachers with guns and retired military personnel on campus. After mass shootings in 2019, he voiced his support for “red flag laws” and stronger background checks.

Harris is a gun owner, and seeks to implement more gun control laws. She plans to “ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require universal background checks, and support red flag laws that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.” Harris says she is a Second Amendment advocate, but she promotes more restrictive measures.

What will happen now?

Donald Trump won the popular vote in the 2024 election by 50 percent compared to Kamala Harris at 48.5 percent. Trump secured his presidential win by 315 electoral votes, and  his administration is preparing to take office. Here is what we know Trump’s 2024 agenda-

Economy-

Trump plans to impose a 10 to 20 percent tariff on US goods imports and a 60 percent tariff on all Chinese goods. These tariffs are intended to offset the US trade deficit and expand national revenue. The 2017 Trump tax laws are set to expire within his term, so he will likely seek to renew them. Monetary laws must originate from the House of Representatives, which is currently in a Republican majority, so many of Trump’s laws addressing money could be passed with congressional approval. He plans on lowering the corporate income tax rate to 15% from the current 21%.

Health-

It is extremely difficult for Trump to make any changes to Obamacare, but he will loosen regulation on insurers. JD Vance, Trump’s chosen Vice President, wants to cut the cost of insurance for younger, healthy people by allowing them to sign up for insurance based on the health risks they face. This was cause insurance to become more expensive for older, unhealthy people. Trump will not codify any protections under Roe but has also said he will not pass a national abortion ban.

Climate-

Trump claims global warming is a “hoax” and intends to roll back Biden-era efficacy standards and revoke emission standards. He does not oppose electric vehicles but promises to end all electric vehicle incentives Biden imposed. This deregulation is aimed to boost the economy and allow companies to be able to produce more without struggle. During Trump’s first term, he has announced that he will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, which  is aimed at limiting the increase in global temperatures to 1.7 celsius degrees above the pre industrial level. He plans to open up more areas for oil and gas drilling. Many other deregulation initiatives will be taken to grant more freedom to the fossil fuel industry and allow large corporations to be exempt from decarbonization efforts.

Immigration-

“Trump will unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to implement the most spectacular migration crackdown,” says Stephen Miller, one of Trump’s closest advisors. Trump will focus on mass deportation operations on “day one” and pursue legislation to increase the mass detention of immigrants. In his second term, we can expect to see Trump try to expand ICE’s capacity and thus support law enforcement in identifying and locating immigrants. Among other legislation, Trump’s legal action towards immigration will seek to crack down on illegal immigration and focus on mass deportation.

Many highschool students think that politics don’t affect them. At our school, this very claim is fostered in the belief of the majority of our population. Lets pivot to fixate on Utah and how the youth in Orem really is affected.

Utah-

During Trump’s first term, he focused on the National Parks of Utah. In 2017, “he shrank the size of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments by more than 1 million acres.” (Washington Post) The federal government owns about 69% of the state, and Trump wanted  “to prevent federal overreach” . Biden restored the protections of the national parks, but Trump could reverse this and pave the way for oil drilling and recreational use on these lands.

Schools-

According to Donald Trump’s website, “President Trump will get Critical Race Theory, transgender ideology, and left-wing indoctrination OUT of our schools– and he will get reading, writing, and arithmetic back IN” to prepare students for jobs and life after high school. He wants to cut out all “leftwing indoctrination” out of public school systems. Trump will cut federal funding for any school that teaches Critical Race Theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children. He also believes great principals cultivate a great school and supports the election of a principle by the parents of the students at school.

Gender-

Donald Trump will reverse Joe Biden’s gender affirming care policies and “will sign an executive order instructing every federal agency, including the Department of Education, to cease all programs that promote the concept of sex and gender transition, at any age.” He will promote positive education on the nuclear family and the roles of mothers and fathers. He will ask congress to make a bill defining that the only genders recognized by the government are male and female- and they are assigned at birth. Trump will also clarify that Title Nine will prohibit men from participating in women’s sports.

To conclude, below is the list of Trump’s platform for Agenda 47. We can expect to see the effects of this plan during Trump’s upcoming term in 2025.
