Since makeup is a socially encouraged daily routine, it isn’t often considered an addiction. Girls from various ages were surveyed about their personal beliefs. The issue was evidently controversial.
Anonymous described her thoughts on makeup, “Imagine waking up in the morning and the first thing on your to-do list is to change your appearance in the hopes yourself and others will like you better.” She hands-down agrees with the 9.4% of those surveyed that makeup is mostly negative.
Junior, Ryann Abunuwara, disagrees: “I consider makeup art work. I’m proud when I have good makeup!” Ryann is part of the 25% that believes makeup is positive.
The remaining 65.5% believe makeup is neutral. This percent seemed to agree: “There is a time where you could have too much, but appropriately applied it can only make you feel more confident.”
Where do you draw the line? Has makeup become a necessity for modern-day girls; is it now a common addiction?
Nearly eighty-four percent agreed makeup can be an addiction. When asked further if they liked themselves with or without make-up better, 71.9% said with. Their response to the next question seems self-contradictory: When asked, ‘Do you feel self-conscious without it?’ the vote was split in two. Approximately forty-seven percent said yes and fifty-three percent no.
How can the majority admit they prefer themselves with makeup and only forty-seven percent say they’re self-conscious without it? After all, fifty percent also claimed they rarely go without it and twenty-five percent said they refuse to not wear makeup to school. The facts seem jumbled.
Recurring comments explained this; A common theme appeared when girls were allowed to voice their opinion. They said, yes, they feel more comfortable with makeup-it can be fun!-when applied “appropriately,” the addiction is avoided.
Thus, beautifully stated by anonymous: “Makeup itself isn’t a bad thing. It’s what purpose girls put behind it that changes its nature. […] Sure it’s nice to hide some ‘teenage flaws’ but don’t let it decide who you are.”
