“If you live among wolves you have to act like a wolf.” -Nikita Khrushchev
It’s a dog eat dog world, where the strong survive and the weak are devoured. As we begin to pass from our teenage life to adulthood, we discover that the key to endure is following the world’s tradition of “survival of the fittest.” We are not wolves within a pack, but our world is full of Alphas–leaders–and to be successful and happy, we must become Alphas ourselves.
Being an Alpha means to be a leader through actions, personality, skill, and confidence, as CITT’s course states. To become an Alpha, two key things are required: confidence and self esteem.
Confidence is one of the greatest things to achieve; confidence allows a person to accomplish any goals they pursue, walk with an air none can replicate, and be a leader. In a school environment, it is important to be confident in academics and within the social scene as well; people are drawn to this characteristic.
Morgan Palmer, an OHS junior, said, “[Being confident] means you have good self esteem… it is something people look for, and it gives a sense of comfort [because] it shows you’re okay with who you are, and it increases your chance of being successful in life.”
To be confident requires some steps. First, people have to do things they’re good at or try their hand at new environments. Second, it is important to try to engage in physical activities (when one feels better about their bodies, they feel better about themselves), learn power poses (hands on hips, keep the body open, etc), and be a bit spontaneous. Most importantly, run the pack, don’t be a follower.
Morgan emphasized this by explaining, “… start out by doing little things out of your comfort zone till it grows, then do more. [Confident people] know that they can do what they are doing so they don’t worry about it.”
Austin Kirkby added, “A great way to become confident is to become a leader. If you start to make decisions yourself, you can become confident.”
We can only be the greatest counterparts of ourselves if we give ourselves the opportunity to do so. Confidence gives a chance to all those who attempt to seize it to further themselves in ways they need to and give others an example to follow.
