Here at Orem High, everyone has their own breakfast habits, or the absence of them.
“I don’t want to get up earlier to make breakfast,” Rachelle Nelson, a senior at OHS, said in a recent interview. She also said that in the morning she faces “stomach problems”. Because of these reasons, she rarely eats breakfast.
This is true for many students, but there are other reasons why many skip this meal. For example, students could have early morning seminary, college classes, or driver’s ed. Since these occur even earlier than school, it may be hard to wake up for breakfast.
However, some students always eat breakfast, despite certain circumstances, because they believe it is necessary.
“I feel sick without eating breakfast. And then I am hungry in first period,” said Morgan Jardine, a junior at Orem High. When asked if it was difficult to find time for breakfast, she answered, “No, because it is mandatory and part of my routine.”
Both Morgan and Rachelle said they concentrate better in class when they have had a good breakfast, because they are not distracted by their hunger.
Even teachers face this problem. Mr. Wytiaz said that he can still concentrate when he has skipped breakfast, however his patience runs thin. Pay attention to the moods of teachers; they may have skipped breakfast!
Each student and teacher have their own schedule, hence the differences in how they feel when they do or do not eat breakfast. As seen above, it might not only be the struggle of finding time; it could be feeling sick, early morning activities, or simply not wanting to eat in the morning.
Despite the difficulty of finding time for breakfast, Rachelle said that she would love to eat breakfast everyday because she wants to develop healthier habits.
