American football is one of America’s most successful televised sports. While it is an enjoyable game, it can be confusing to the untrained eye, therefore, a few key aspects of the sport must be understood before one becomes a football expert.
Referees are the men dressed in black and white who judge each football play; the referees also perform many interpretive dances, and the crowd will either groan its disapproval or applaud at their performance. These guys usually have a hard time because watchers either cherish these (at times) celestial beings or utterly despise them (if one does not know what team they are rooting for, simply cheer when the rest of the crowd does).
Running and passing plays. Running plays are where men daringly place their souls within the hands of their coach; if a running play is ordered, these loyal players shall charge and willingly combat their opposing counterpart. Naturally, the best way to win a football game is by running the ball up the middle, straight into a brick wall of men because that always works out.
Passing plays are less aggressive, but require great courage for they are risky. They do allow a player to gain many yards for his team, possibly earning another down, but they risk their reputations, souls, and honor based on whether or not they catch the oncoming football. If they do manage to catch the pigskin, they are praised and celebrated. If not, their name is no longer allowed to be spoken.
The butt slap. The butt slap is perhaps the most important and widely recognized symbol of football. It is a little love tap of mutual accomplishment and fulfillment; a gesture given to a fellow teammate to show love and appreciation for all a player has done. It is perhaps one of the most bromantic and vital aspect of a football game for without it, there is no football team.
The very function of football relies on these four topics, and to be a perfect watcher and participator of football, it is essential to know these. To learn these fundamental factors of football will not only widen one’s perspective of the game, but also, the enjoyment.
