A person’s opinion and excitement level about Halloween changes drastically as they get older. At least, for most people.

From the ages 3-12 excitement levels gradually grow as kids learn what Halloween is. Children of these ages are in the prime time of their lives for trick-or-treating.  When a group of young kids was asked what their favorite part of the holiday was, the answer was almost unanimously, “Candy!”

Once students get into middle school or junior high the excitement drops off some. It is no longer socially acceptable for you to go door-to-door asking for candy, and therefore is little to no motivation for you to do anything to celebrate. It doesn’t help that it is no longer “cool” for you to dress up, so kids simply don’t try as hard.

After that students go to high school and college. This is the stage where it doesn’t matter if they are super into Halloween or don’t really care anymore. Those who don’t care go about like it is a normal day. Some people do simple DIY costumes, while others go all out.

“I think it is fun to dress up and be something or someone different for a day,” said Marie Jacobs, a senior here at Orem High.

No matter the opinion on dressing up, the one thing that stays constant in everyone’s views is that candy is one of the best parts of Halloween.
