Makeup is something most females have grown up with. From the time girls are young children they’re exposed to makeup. Whether it’s watching their mom getting ready in the morning, to playing with the kids’ make-up sold at nearly any toy store.

A study conducted in 2012 by Renfrew Center Foundation states that 65% of girls began wearing make-up between ages 8 to 13. 58% of girls 13 to 18 wear make-up almost daily.

“I started wearing make-up in fifth grade, and although I’ve learned to be comfortable with myself with and without makeup, I do think I look better with make-up.” Whitney Wolfe said.

Another interesting statistic from that study says that 27% of girls would not be comfortable leaving their house without makeup on. 20% of those girls also said they experience negative thoughts regarding their appearance when not wearing make-up.

“I’ve been wearing a lot less make-up this year than I did last. And I think my self esteem has actually gone up. But I do feel like people subconsciously treat me better when I wear make-up.” Said Sage Newitt.

The cosmetic industry is a multi-billion dollar empire. In the United States alone the industry makes around 56 billion dollars yearly, and is projected to continually grow in the following years.

“I spend around $100 a month of makeup.” Whitney wolfe said. Although this may seem like a high number, many girls who habitually buy make-up can attest to the high prices of cosmetics.

The makeup industry is a powerful one, but what makes a woman beautiful is being confident in her own skin, with or without makeup on.
